Hôtel Gavarni: First “Green” Hotel in Paris
November 6th, 2009Hôtel Gavarni, located in the chic Passy neighborhood, recently became the first independent hotel in Paris to earn the European “eco-label.” This label is awarded to businesses for their eco-friendly efforts, but it doesn’t come easy. In order to be eligible for the label, businesses must meet 84 strict ecological criteria.
Hôtel Gavarni manager Xavier Moraga, a fervent ecologist, worked tirelessly to upgrade the 100-year hotel to meet the eco-label standards, adding pressure regulators for showers, double-glazing windows, and increasing energy efficiency. Gavarni’s electricity comes from 100% from renewable energies, the bath products are guaranteed 100% natural, and breakfast is—you guessed it—organic.
But Hôtel Gavarni’s commitment to the environment goes beyond the 84 criteria of the label. The clients are encouraged to take part in a collective ecological awareness. Thus, when clients leave with taxis for stations and airports, car sharing is suggested. The hotel also takes care of the public transportation (or Velib) fares for its employees, to incite them to respect the planet in their commute to and from work.
No need to worry—protecting the environment need not be painful. The hotel’s renovation included a redo of all 21 rooms and 4 suites, adding elegant embroidered bedspreads, new curtains, and wall-to-wall carpeting.

Room rates are between 110 and 500 € per night, though from November 8 through December 30. 2009 they are offering a special promotion with rooms from 95 to 390 €.
